Surface and groundwater monitoring - Soil Water and Catchment Management

Surface water monitoring
SWCM is able to offer a range of cost-effective surface water monitoring. We have designed many large, catchment scale, monitoring programmes and also regularly implement small schemes on headwater streams.

Hydrological monitoring should be robust enough to account for temporal and spatial variability. Usually, a period of at least one year is the minimum as this allows seasonal variability to be assessed, but occasional ‘reconnaissance’ visits can also be useful in some circumstances if timing and antecedent conditions are factored alongside reporting limitations.

We can offer:
  • Development of monitoring strategy; locations, methods and equipment
  • Discharge monitoring using open-channel area-velocity flow meters
  • Development of gauging curves in small open channels
  • Water level logging
  • Logging rain gauges
  • Reconnaissance visits and discharge estimates

Groundwater monitoring
SWCM have experience in the installation of shallow dipwells and water level loggers. We have undertaken monitoring in a range of locations, including water dependent SSSI’s and Scheduled Ancient Monuments.

We can offer:
  • Development of appropriate shallow groundwater or soil-water monitoring
  • Installation of shallow dipwells
  • Installation of water level loggers
  • Routine water level readings
  • Drafting of site-specific water level management plans for protected sites and SSSI’s
